Interview with Elisa Malo

q)Please introduce yourself.

a)Elisa Malo

q) Where do you live and work?

a)I live and work in Mexico City

q) How would you describe your work to someone who has never seen it?

a)Disturbingly cute little uncanny creatures

q) How did you start in the arts? How/when did you realize you were an artist?

a)I started when I was a little kid, drawing all over, all of the time, and I think I’m in the whole process and journey of being an artist...I don't know if that ever ends.

q) What are your favorite art materials and why?

a)Ink, any kind of ink...bic pens, stilographs, chinese ink,gel pens...I think that I like them because they allow me to do exactly the kind of fluid traces that my drawings need to become alive.

q) What/who influences you most?

a)Anything misterious. Also I have these momentary crushes on random things, could be some image I saw online, characters I see in movies, a smile or a song, a feeling I get, a gaze, love, sadness.
If we are talking about artists I admire, I like a lot David Lynch, Robert Crumb, Henry Darger and Toulouse Lautrec.
All this things can be part of my drawings

q) Describe a typical day of art making for you.

a)I have these moments in wich I say to myself "its time to make art", and so I sit, look at my pens, markers and pencils, take them and start drawing a line at some white sheet, but then nothing comes out.
The real moments in wich I make drawings I truly like are when my mind is flying very very far and I’m not quite concentrating, it’s better when I’m drawing while on the phone, eating or listening to distractive music.

q) Do you have goals, specific things you want to achieve with your art or in your career as an artist?

a)I just have to realese these evil creatures inside me and introduce them to the world :)

q) What contemporary artists or developments in art interest you?

a)I really like murakami's animations, neem art too.
I would like to take my drawings there.

q) How long does it typically take you to finish a piece?

a)It’s always different. It could be minutes or days, or it could never be completely finished. it usually takes about 15 minutes.

q) Do you enjoy selling your pieces, or are you emotionally attached to them?

a)Wow, this is a very good question.
I think I am attached to them, but I also enjoy selling them.
I think I like to choose the costumer.

q) Is music important to you? If so, what are some things you're listening to now?

a)Yes its very important! It has to do a lot with the mood I’m in when I’m working on my pieces.
I’m listening to very different things, from stuff like emergency pizza party, of montreal, aterciopelados and the unicorns to things like the warlocks, illya kuryaki and the valderramas, animal collective and my all time favorite: the pixies.

q) Books?

a)Aldous Huxley: a happy world
Paul Auster: mr. vertigo
Georges Bataille: story of the eye
Jack Kerouak: on the road

also fashion magazines and some borrowed comics.

q) What theories or beliefs do you have regarding creativity or the creative process?

a)I think everybody has its own powerfull creativity but it needs to be explored and it needs to explote.

q) What do you do (or what do you enjoy doing) when you're not creating?

a)I enjoy watching lots of movies, listening music, having a walk, spending time with my boyfriend, going to concerts and parties, eating, sleeping...

q) Do you have any projects or shows coming up that you are particularly excited about?

a)Yes! an exhibition in the city where I was born (Xalapa, Veracuz, Mexico) in two weeks!

q) Do you follow contemporary art scenes? If so, how? What websites, magazines, galleries do you prefer?

a)-Ienjoy these:

q) Ask yourself a question you'd like to answer, and answer it.

a)Would I like feedback?

I'd love to know what people think of my artwork, I'd love to collaborate with other artists, travel around the world and make exhibitions everywhere :)
